Ultrasound Scanner Presented to Luton & Dunstable Hospital

Luton and Dunstable Hospital has benefited from a charity donation for an ultrasound scanner to aid diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, which commonly affects men over 55 years of age and kills 10,000 each year nationally.

The Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons has made a charitable donation of £2M nationally towards the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.  Luton and Dunstable Hospital have received £40,000 from the Bedfordshire Province of Mark Master Masons as part of this national donation to purchase a new ultrasound scanner that will provide the latest type of imaging equipment and increase the accuracy of biopsies.

The Provincial Grand Master Harry Arnold who made the presentation of the ultrasound scanner on Thursday 7th July 2005 at the Urology Dept of the Luton & Dunstable Hospital said, "This is part of a £2 million nation-wide initiative by the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons for the treatment of prostate cancer in local hospitals for the benefit of whoever requires such treatment."

Mr Asad Saleemi, consultant surgeon in the Urology Dept said, “Prostate cancer is an extremely common cancer with a high morbidity and mortality.   Any equipment that helps us fight this disease is invaluable.  Technology keeps moving and it is essential that we have the latest, most advanced machines available for our local population.”

R. W. Bro. Harry Arnold said, "I am delighted that the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons Fund of Benevolence have had the opportunity to make such a wonderful gift to the Hospital and I hope it will be of great help to the staff of the Primrose Unit in diagnosing and treating prostate problems which particularly affect men in the later years"

The donation of a transrectal ultrasound scanner is part of a national gift of £2 million from the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons Fund of Benevolence to aid the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Mr Tazi Husain, Divisional Clinical Director for Surgery and Anaesthetics at Bedford Hospital, said: "This is a hugely generous donation by the Masons. Receiving this scanner unit will enable us to extend our research and diagnosis of cases of urological cancers, and specifically help in the management of patients with particular symptoms."
